Private daily brief · Algeria agri-food trade & policy

Algeria is rewriting what it buys, grows and permits. Read it first.

Akufi tracks the country's food-sovereignty drive every working day and turns it into short, sourced briefs on import rules, OAIC and ONAB tenders, dairy and livestock, Saharan investment, institutions and people. Independent of any authority. Public reporting combined with insight from a field network of agronomists, consultants and market operators, every item sourced.

Why it matters

The gap between target and outcome is the signal.

Whether a target holds or slips decides import volumes, tender timing and investment risk. Akufi reports both sides, every day, each attributed to its source.

The stated ambition

  • 2025 as the last year of durum imports, 2026 for barleyGovernment goal, reported by CapMad
  • Durum self-sufficiency by 2027Date set by the agriculture minister in June 2024, per Milling MEA
  • One million hectares of Saharan land in concessionsODAS target, per TSA
  • Grain storage towards 6.4 Mt by 2026Shipbroker research, SSY

The measured reality

  • OAIC bought over 500,000 t of Canadian durum in Dec 2025 and 400,000 t in Apr 2026North Africa Post
  • Bread wheat is roughly 75–80% of wheat imports, and not the main target of the pushMiller Magazine
  • Regular milling-wheat tenders continue: about 600,000 t closed on 13 Oct 2026UkrAgroConsult

Principles

Credibility is the product.

These rules are part of every issue, not an add-on. Each issue is reviewed by the editor before it is sent.

  1. 01Independence. No affiliation with any Algerian or foreign authority. No sponsored content in editorial items.
  2. 02Neutrality. Official targets sit beside measured outcomes. Claims are attributed, never endorsed; partisan sources are labelled.
  3. 03Sourcing. Every item links to its public original or is attributed, by role, to our field network. Nothing invented or reconstructed; anything unverified is flagged.
  4. 04Field network. Agronomists, consultants, veterinarians, traders and other practitioners add on-the-ground context that public reporting misses. Their input is labelled as field insight, cross-checked where possible, and never includes leaked tender data or confidential documents.
  5. 05Private distribution. Members are approved individually. Content is never published openly.

A reserve kept against hard years

Akufi (ⴰⴽⵓⴼⵉ) is the clay grain jar of Kabyle households. مطمورة, the matmora, is its counterpart: the underground grain pit of the Maghreb drawn in our mark. Akufi plays the same role for information.
